The Environmental Philosophy Summer School aims to bring together PhD students and advanced master's students interested in a wide range of topics in environmental philosophy. It offers a unique opportunity to engage in discussions with leading scholars in the field, acquire valuable experience and expertise, and establish a new scholarly network.
The program involves lectures and workshops on themes such as the Anthropocene, sustainability, light pollution, environmental justice, governance, and democracy, the role of technology in environmental crises, and the aesthetics of nature. Participants will also visit the nearby Turów Coal Mine, which is the subject of ongoing international legal proceedings. This excursion will serve as a case study, enabling students to reflect on it through the theoretical concepts covered in lectures and workshops, such as justice in decarbonization, principlist ethical analysis, and the involvement of non-human actors. Moreover, the program offers a hike in the beautiful Jizera Mountains, along with other social events such as a farewell party, barbecue, film screenings, and much more.

This year's event will take place at the Hejnice Monastery, conveniently located in the north of the Czech Republic, between Prague (140 km), Dresden (150 km), and Wroclaw (200 km). The accommodation consists of twin rooms equipped with a toilet, shower, fridge, and desk. It offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and coffee breaks, as well as fast and free wifi, and is wheelchair accessible. The monastery is a Czech cultural heritage site, comprising a historical Franciscan church complemented by serene gardens. The surrounding Jizera Mountains provide an idyllic backdrop, aligning with the theme of the entire school.
The school is organized by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Pardubice in collaboration with the Center for Environmental and Technology Ethics - Prague (CETE-P) based at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It is funded mainly by the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). Students who are not affiliated with the consortium universities (University of Wroclaw, Wageningen University, Comenius University Bratislava) are responsible for covering their own travel and food and accommodation expenses of €350, payable to the organizers by 31st of March; the participation itself is free. Successful participants may receive three credits.
