Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Charles University is looking for assistant professor!

Job title: Assistant Professor / Associate Professor
Field and specialization: Religious Studies, specialization in method and theory, in history of religion, and in contemporary religious phenomena
Expected salary/job rank: AP2/AP3 level
Full-time position: 1,0 (40 hours per week)

Job description:

  • teaching on B.A. and M.A. levels in the Religious Studies programme,
  • supervision of students’ term papers and theses, especially at the B.A. and M.A. level,
  • research activities,
  • academic publications,
  • contributing to the development of the Religious Studies section in close cooperation with its other members,
  • other pedagogical, academic and administrative pertinent to AP2/AP3 rank

Job requirements:

  • doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in the given area,
  • an excellent command of English, both written and spoken, comparable to C1 level, ability to read in at least one other foreign language; knowledge of Czech is not necessary but is expected by the end of the third year (comparable to A1 level) should the contract be renewed,
  • publications in the given area,
  • specialization in method and theory of religious studies,
  • ability to teach courses on at least one traditional religion in its entire historical range (excluding Christianity, ancient Greek religion, Old Norse religion, and ancient Egyptian religion)
  • the ability to analyse from a religious studies perspective various forms of contemporary religiosity, whether explicit or implicit
  • experience in teaching religious studies classes at a university
  • ability to work in a team.

Conditions of employment

The Faculty of Arts offers starting salary 31 400 CZK per month, additional salary funds can be obtained depending on eligibility for participation in grants and research projects. The Faculty covers social and medical insurance according to EU regulations. According to the university rules the contract can be prolonged after three years; the prolongation is either for another period of three years or tenure. The probationary period is three months.
